Make a green swimming pool blue again

September 26, 2017

PROCEDURE TO TREAT A GREEN POOL

GREEN POOL WATER or GREEN MARKS on pool surfaces are signs of an algae infestation that has bloomed and is now thriving due to a chemical imbalance in the pool water.

The algae may appear as

  • A GREENISH GROWTH on the pool floor and walls.
  • A GREEN TINT to the pool water.
  • A GREENISH MATERIAL suspended to the pool water.

Avoid a GREEN POOL by regularly testing the pool water pH levels and sanitiser levels.

Address any imbalance promptly.

TO TREAT A GREEN POOL

  1. Add ACID to the pool water to bring the pH level of the water down.
    • For pool chlorine to work effectively, the pH level needs to be between 7.0 to 7.6.
  2. Add CHLORINE to the pool as a shock dose.
    • This means super-chlorinating the water to kill off any bacteria and algae.
  3. Add either TROPICAL/ TROPICLEAR or ALGAE KNOCK OUT or MIRACLEAR ALGAECIDE to the water to help kill off and prevent the growth of the algae.
  4. Add MIRACLEAR LIQUID CLARIFIER.
    • This helps to clump microscopic particles together so the pool filter can pick them up.
    • If using a sand filter, we recommend using a SPARKLE PILL placed in the pump basket.
  5. Rake out all debris from the pool and thoroughly brush the pool walls and floor.
  6. Turn the pump ON for 24 – 48 hours (or until water is crystal clear).
    • Green or cloudy water will quickly clog a filter.
    • If there is a cartridge filter it may need to be cleaned regularly during this treatment program to maintain proper filtration.
  7. Retest water to re-balance (if a service job) or ask customer to bring in a water sample to enable you to re-balance the water

Recommend the customer then go on a 12 month ALGAE PREVENTION PROGRAM with LO-CHLOR POOL ALGAECIDE & WINTERISER ALGAECIDE

    • If they have used TROPICAL/TROPICLEAR POOL ALGAECIDE they should wait 2 months before adding first dose of LO-CHLOR POOL ALGAECIDE
    • If they have used ALGAE KNOCK OUT or MIRACLEAR POOL ALGAECIDE they should add first dose of LO-CHLOR POOL ALGAECIDE immediately

NOTES ON THE ALGAECIDES

  • TROPICAL/TROPICLEAR POOL ALGAECIDE contains copper and benzalkonium chloride
    • NOT to be used in pools with IONISERS or NATURE 2
    • DO NOT superchlorinate in the 48 hours either before or after adding the product – THIS IS PRIMARILY FOR SHOP CUSTOMERS AS IT IS DIFFICULT TO OBSERVE FOR SERVICE WORK. FOR SERVICE WORK as recommended by you
  • ALGAE KNOCK OUT is METAL FREE and contains a very high grade of benzalkonium chloride
    • MAY be used in pools with IONISERS or NATURES 2
    • IDEAL for pebble pools
    • Works best at a pH of around 6.8
    • Always advise the customer that the product will FOAM for a short while and have a bit of an AROMA/SMELL
  • MIRACLEAR POOL ALGAECIDE is METAL FREE and contains Oxiraine
    • MAY be used in pools with IONISERS or NATURES 2
    • Does not FOAM
    • IDEAL for GREEN POOLS
    • Built in clarifier
    • May be used as both a CURATIVE and MAINTENANCE algaecide
  • LO-CHLOR /WINTERISER POOL ALGAECIDE contains copper
    • NOT to be used in pools with IONISERS or NATURE 2
    • DO NOT superchlorinate in the 48 hours either before or after adding the product –

DOSAGE RATE OF ALGAECIDES IS IMPORTANT

  • TROPICAL/ TROPICLEAR and ALGAE KNOCK OUT – Add 500mls for every 10,000 litres of pool water.
  • MIRACLEAR POOL ALGAECIDE – Add 200mls for every 10,000 litres of pool water.
  • LO-CHLOR /WINTERISER POOL ALGAECIDEAdd 100mls for every 10,000 litres of pool water EVERY 3 MONTHS
    • Never use calcium based chlorine in conjunction with copper based chemicals.
    • Run filter as normal to ensure adequate filtration
    • Recommend removing the cleaner from the pool prior to adding chemicals.
    • Recommend ceasing swimming during the period of treatment until the pool water is chemically re-balanced.
