In a swimming pool sand filter the tiny sand particles trap dirt and debris and push clean water through to the pickup unit. Some swimming pool systems use a cartridge filter. In this system, the swimming pool filter traps particles as water is pool water is pushed through the system and the filters are removed, hosed down for cleaning, and put back into the system.
